Remerged - The Unknown Dimension

Thank you Sophocle for this small pearl. It's been a while since I have found anything original in the psytrance world.

Here's the first album by Remerged, a new guy who takes a particular approach, blending frenetic rhythms with bits of dubstep and chiptune, as well as thick layers of chill synths. Special prize goes to the track "Crystal Rhodes".

You like psytrance ? You do ? Me too ! You know, I think that, maybe, everybody actually does like psytrance but some are afraid of what they could find inside... Just maybe...

It's been a while since I wanted to post this album. There are lots and lots of psytrance albums, the richest are usually compilations with different styles and subgenres, but when you find an album from one artist with a style that won't bore you even after dozens of listenings, you know you've found something exceptional.

Sonopictorial's music is upbeat, progressive and bouncy, taking its time to travel through the galaxy.

And yes, it's possible to spend days on Ektoplazm listening to album after album to find small treasures like this one that spend their time waiting for us to lend an attentive ear.

Somnium - Rocket Science

I know the Goa/Psytrance section has not received the love it deserves these times around. But it is just a phase. In fact I discovered that the best Psytrance albums are the shortest ones of three to five tracks, because there the artist lets it all out, without any "additional" track, so that you want more and more.

(Well made) compilations work too. I think a psytrance producer comes at the peak of his/her art when he/she has a particular recognisable style and starts walking away from the basic tagada with weird noises to get closer to the earthly vortex of goa-energy to find their inspiration.

Well Somnium got close enough, and gives us four tracks of uplifting shifty psytrance, going from techtrance to morning full-on with twists of... ragtime ? Yes he does.

The secret to enjoying psytrance : alternate between different artists.

VA - Nibbana

Goa is like chocolate, the more you have, the more you want. Like so many times it is a pack of tracks from various artists, nicely compiled by DJ Tude, celebrating his ten years of being a DJ and presenting his new project, Cosmic Racer (track 5). From the start, track one gives away the general atmosphere. I know, it is not goa at all, it is psytrance, because if goa goes tzingiwingzschw, psytrance goes tagada, and yes, even if I have made the unforgivable blasphemy of grouping the two of them under the tag Goa/Psytrance, they are in fact very different. I am a horrible person, but thus the site is easier to read.

As usual also, I cannot really say that every single track in this compilation is pure delight, genius expressed into sound, but there are enough pulsatronic supersonic tracks to please everyone's ears, I think, I know.

Underground Alien Factory Records - Goa Overdose 3

Just some very good old-school goa trance for nostalgic proto-hippies, probably the best "Goa Overdose" compilation for the moment. I asked myself for a long time what was the difference between Goa and Psytrance, and this is the answer I've found : Psytrance goes "tagada" while Goa goes "tweebeeyoyowdeweebee". Prepare your brain for some sonic acid.

V.A. - Labyrinth of Your Mind II

It has been a while since there was only weird and sublime chill music (which I love of course) shared on the blog. But there was a little lack of pulsatron rhythm (let's put it like this). I was just telling me this when I stumbled on this release on Ektoplazm's Facebook page. Various artists from Mystical Waves Records putting it together to create sweet Psytrancey waves of pure positive energy.
This one is quite a treat for the ears.

Distant Tremor - V/A Uprising

When you're a various artist, there's no vacation. No one cares, no one sympathizes, you just stay home and play synthesizers. But now it's time to rise !

This release's artwork speaks for itself. First the frogs, chimps and giraffe, benevolent animals of chill music (damn, what am I getting at ?) and just after, the big dinosaurs of psytrance rushing like hell to god knows where.

It is, well, like a jewel of goa progressive and sometimes full-on psytrance encased in a chilly box. It opens with a nice chilly track, Serenity, from Sephira. Then starts to shift towards more trancelike grounds with Organismic's Unexpected Sky, right until it gets down to it with H-Sunrise's Enhanced Reality and the rest of the release's energetic pulsing music, till the last track chills you again with electrohypnotic vibes. Still, I'm putting it only under the Psytrance tag, because that's really the core of the release.

Seems it is the only free-priced release from the Distant Tremor label, but it is of incredible quality, it will make the small hair of the back of your neck rise almost instantly. Tagada tagada.

Microcosm - Higher Levels

Here is the first album I ever downloaded on Ektoplazm. The first one that made itself visible to my bewildered eyes and ears, tickling my then dull and flat mindscapes with psychedelic pseudopods to give life and shape to it.

If it had to be defined, then maybe monstrogoalord is a term that would fit, old-school, as Weasel would say. I once said about Hypnoxock that if someone ever asked me "what is goa ?" I would answer with "Oddities", but this one is quite the competitor.

If your brain should melt entirely or partly when exposed to this music, don't worry, because everything always ends up fine. I think, maybe.

Various Artists - Growing Seeds

When I was young and foolish, I thought that goa was goa, and that it was as simple as that. But in the years passing, I learned to recognise different types and sub-types of goa. Even now when I'm talking about it, I don't really exactly know what is goa... But I can assure you that this compilation is packed with enough full-on psytrance to make holes in your walls.

To listen to the whole release at once could hurt fragile ears, even mine. So it is better to let it go drop by drop directly in your geniculate ganglion, this way it will have its typical goa power effect without causing too much destruction. The first track is really monstrous.

Colour - Devine Moments of Truth

Tagadagadagadagada brwhiiii whrii wawawa brwhooo tagada taga brwhoooo dadada brwhiiiii is certainly what you will tell me, and I will indulge this, but just once.

It is also more or less what you will hear if you let this album tell its weird stories, which I can only entice you to do. And you will also tell me "but what the... ? this is psytrance ! where is the glitch, man ? you screwed up again !" but don't you think there is something glitcheous in Colour's music ? The atmosphere, how it sounds, it seems evident to me, there is something fun in there, fun and powerful, the right blend of glitch and psytrance, but the world of electronic music is so big, and the borders are so blurry that we could almost say anything about any subject without ever being completely right or wrong, so what the hell, let's do it.

I wish you a sweet listening, hoping this music will make you dance enough to warm you up in these difficult times. Oh ! I almost forgot but my birthday is coming soon ! I will post something bigger than usual that day, with more albums, more music, iiiiiih I love surprises !!

And to those who would tell me that there are evident drugeous references on my blog, I will answer, bound by the shackles of law, that this is far from being my fault.

Mixes from Tobias Bassline

Ever had the feeling that some people get too much free time ? Well, me too. They spend all day making music and searching for more, stitching some to others to make big chunks of ear-pounding goodness, absolutely disgusting... but there's a bright side so we won't complain too much, or at least not too loud. Tobias Bassline, or TB, is one of these people. I am jealous of his Youtube channel and have no shame of saying it out loud. It is clear, clean and tidy, full of ambient, downtempo, psytrance, techno and psybient playlists and mixes... When I see that, well... I think it's time for me to tidy my own channel up a bit, so that human eyes can find their way through it. I'm going to give it a stab soon, but not now, because I still have a chair to burn (it's hurting my back so bad right now).

Hypnoxock - Acid Return Remixes

Feels like I've been searching for it all this time. But yes, there is another one ! Before anything, you should know that listening to this music while on the freeway is a good and a bad idea at the same time, it helps getting to your destination on time (and even earlier than expected), but also makes you think you're driving a space shuttle on its way for the nearest nebula, which might confuse other drivers. Use with caution, I am not responsible for what you do with this release. The last track is more psybientic, to help you release all the steam you accumulated during the previous ones.

White Morph - Dream Catcher

Another proof that you do not necessarily need a large number of tracks to make a good album. Four powerful morning psytrance tracks full of positive energy.

I discovered White Morph's music only recently while going on Ektoplazm after a long time away. Everything on Ektoplazm is not always genius, sometimes very good release get bad notes and vice versa, astoundingly beautiful covers can hide flat uninteresting music. You can't really trust what you see, you see ? Trust me, I've listened to every single release on this website. That is why I'm putting only the very best on La Mojoteque. That will save you a lot of time now, won't it ?

HelixNebula - Trip To Infinity

When roaming through Ektoplazm's many (MANY) different releases, I began to notice how so much psychedelic trance can feel and sound like each other. Sometimes it only goes as far as a "tagada tagada" rhythm and weird noises in the background. That is maybe because so many beginners are too hasty, they put their first release on the Internet without thinking, without really working on the details. Nothing psychedelic at all in these...

But there are also many great treasures to be found. I stumbled on HelixNebula's release by chance and wasn't even going to listen to it really. But I did, and at the time I remember I thought it was the best goa psytrance ever made : the rhythms shift and are used in an intelligent manner, weird noises are present but scarce and none are superfluous, and last but not least this music literally sends you into space in a luminous spaceship to meet yourself and others in a dancing world, a trippy galaxy... (sorry I got carried away).

Hypnoxock - Oddities

To begin on a positive note, a completely free release found on the great Ektoplazm netlabel, "Oddities" from Hypnoxock, a Spanish duo formed by Victor Solsona and Pedro Quijada. Incredible psychedelic trance at its best. Made for space travel.
